Historical Questions

First Time Users

Equity Evaluator's sole purpose is to analyze stock market data, both fundamental and technical, to generate stock picks. However, Equity Evaluator has several other uses.

FOR FIRST TIME USERS: it is recommended that you open the end of day quote file "New.ddq". Then click on one of the ticker symbols and select the Graph icon. Then you can see the graphics features available with Equity Evaluator, including trending of Earnings, Earning Estimates, ect. Next close the Graph, and add a ticker symbol in the Symbol Box (upper left had corner), and select the Add Symbol button. This will access the historical quote data from the web and save the data to the location to the quote database folder selected during setup. Next, select Graphics from the Main Menu to graph the data. Note, fundamental data is not obtained from historical data, but daily updates will automatically obtain fundamental data.

The are several end of day (EOD) quote files already built. For example the AMEX, NASDAQ, and NYSE already exist; however, the historical data is not in your database. If you wish, you may combine these files from the Main Menu "Edit". To access the historical data (10 years of data for 10,000 stocks) and save to the database will take approximately 2-4 hours using DSL at 3.0 Mb/s, so this process should be run at a convenient time. Ten Years of data for 10,000 stocks consumes approximately 0.7 GB of hard drive storage. Before running this process, please make the decision on where this data will be stored. We recommend using Windows Explorer to create a folder on you C or other another hard drive called "Quotes". Then select Help from the Main Menu, and run Set Up Wizard again and on Step 4 (Connect LAN), select the folder you just created. Now you are ready to populate your quote database, so you may begin utilizing Equity Quotes' superb end of day graphics. To populate the database, select File from the Main Menu, and select populate database.

Next, you can set up Equity Evaluator to automatically update the database each day after market close. To perform this function you will need to utilize Windows Scheduled Tasks. Simply set up Windows Scheduled Tasks to open Equity Evaluator about 30 minutes after the markets close; for example 4:30 pm. Next, select Settings from the Main Menu. Then select Application and the Data Settings Tab. In the "Automatic Data Collection" section to the right, select Auto Run - EOD, and set the time. If Windows Scheduled Tasks is set to open Equity Evaluator at 4:30 pm, you should set Auto Run - EOD to begin updating quotes at 4:35 pm. Then you will always have fast access to the latest data.

You may begin immediately using the real time quotes features. To open a real time quote file, select "File" from the Main Menu. Then select "Open Quotes File", and select Real Time. Note: Yahoo currently has reverted to provide quotes with a 20 minute delay. However, those with a Fidelity Brokerage account may access quotes without delays (Fidelity Brokerage Account and Logon Required).

Note: To graphically display Earnings, Earning Estimates, Sales, PEG, PE, PS, etc., daily updates must be performed. This fundamental data will be stored in the quote database for future use.

The default location is under the "Net Equities\Equity Evaluator\Quotes\EOD" folder. The EOD quote database is a historical database and should be maintained by updating quotes for each trading day. (See how to automate daily quote downloads below). The EOD quote database is used for EOD graphics and Stock Selector. You may initially populate the quote database in one of two ways:

(1) You can set Equity Evaluator to automatically download the quote history when a ticker symbol is added to the quote grid. This can be accomplished by selecting Settings from the Main Menu. Then select Application and click on the Data Settings Tab. The select either 2, 5, 10, or 20 years of data download. Select Apply and Close the dialog box. Note: this process only builds the database for the single ticker symbol added.

(2) You may select one of the quote files which came with Equity Evaluator to build the database automatically. First, select Settings from the Main Menu. Then select Application and click on the Data Settings Tab. The select either 2, 5, 10, or 20 years of data download. Select Apply and Close the dialog box. To automatically maintain the quotes database, you may simply set up Equity Evaluator to retrieve the EOD quotes at specific days and times. This can be accomplished by (1) selecting Help from the Main Menu and selecting Setup Wizard to guide you through the process, or (2) select Settings from the Main Menu, then Application, and then select the Data Settings Tab. Then select EOD and enter the time under the Automatic Data Collection section to completely automate the process. This will initiate Windows Scheduled Tasks setup. Set Windows Scheduled Tasks to open Equity Evaluator a couple of minutes before the time set in Equity Evaluator.

To manually maintain the quotes database, you may perform one of two processes. (1) You may open the quote file to display in the quote grid and select the Update Quotes button at the top of the quote grid, or (2) you may wish to import an EOD file in to Equity Evaluator to update the quote file, quote grid, and quote database.

The files in the quote database have extensions like "07" to refer to calendar year 2007. These to can be edited with notepad.
